Typography

Listed below are some of the finer details regarding font and spacing choices that will lend towards a more accessible site.

Font Usage

DO

  • Select simple, easily-readable, widely available fonts
  • 12px or larger font size
  • Line height (line spacing) to at least 1.5 times the font size
  • Letter spacing (tracking) to at least 0.12 times the font size

DONT

  • Use too many different font families
  • Overuse font variations such as bold, italics, and ALL CAPITAL LETTERS
  • Justify paragraph alignment

Font Families

Verdana, Tacoma and Georgia are considered some of the most accessible fonts. Ariel and Helvetica are also good choices that are more widely available. But you are not limited to just these. Just make sure your font is simple, easy to read, and does not have any ambiguous letters or numbers that may look like others (such as a lowercase 'L' that looks like the number '1' or a capital 'I')

Things to avoid

  • Text within graphics
  • Blinking or moving text
